Homonyms - Break (As a Noun and Verb)



1.   (verb) – damage
Ø     Charlie is always getting into trouble for breaking things.

2.   (verb) – to end sth
Ø     Sally told us a joke, and that broke the tension in the room.
Ø     Eventually, Tom spoke, breaking the silence.

3.   (verb) – to fail to obey a law/rule or keep a promise
Ø     William wasn’t aware he was breaking the law by jay-walking.
Ø     Vivien was so disappointed when her dad broke his promise to attend her school concert.

4.   (verb) – to use force
Ø     The police threatened to break down the door when Mr  Smith refused to open the door.
Ø     The thieves managed to break the safe open and steal the  diamonds.

5.   (noun) – interruption
Ø     The entire team worked through the day without a break.
Ø     We decided to have a coffee break after two hours of discussion and brainstorming.

6.   (noun) – opportunity
Ø     Natalie’s big break came when she was introduced to a famous music producer.
